Most any BYOD-type ELD with dedicated tablets will come with monthly costs for a data plan. If youâre pairing a BYOD ELD with a smartphone or tablet you already have with a service plan, such cost wouldnât necessarily figure into your back-of-the-envelope investment calculation.

Truckers using phone-based ELDs can change duty status away from truck, FMCSA says
FMCSA will, at least for five years, allow drivers using mobile device-based ELDs (those run on a phone or tablet) to change duty status outside of and away from their vehicle. Such changes in duty status will need to be annotated, the agency says.
