New California laws require smog check for trucks, accelerate move away from diesel trucks
Two bills signed into law last week by California Gov. Gavin Newsom will further crack down on heavy-duty diesel trucks in the state. One law establishes âsmog checksâ for trucks to register and/or operate in the state, while the other is designed to accelerate the move away from diesel-powered trucks to zero emissions vehicles.

FMCSA asserted on Dec. 21 that carriers do not have to provide drivers with the meal and rest breaks dictated by Californiaâs labor code. The Teamsters Union filed a petition days later asking a federal appellate court to reverse FMCSAâs decision.

California city council votes to OK planning boardâs approval for new truck stop
Both interests in support of the stop and those against showed up at Jurupa Valley, Calif., city hall Thursday evening for a council meeting that extended into the wee hours Friday. The result, if all goes according to plan, will be near 200 parking spaces, among other amenities, at State Route 60 and Riverside Drive there.

Dem lawmakers ask DOT to reject ATAâs petition for reprieve from Calif. break laws
ATA in early October petitioned the DOT to intervene into the ongoing conflict over the stateâs stringent laws, which a federal court in 2014 ruled apply to trucking companies and their drivers. A group of 19 Democrats in the House and Senate, however, asked the DOT to reject the petition, saying it requires a Congressional statute.
