Per-mile rates hang near all-time highs in April (and a new inclusion — specialized rate averages)
Per-mile rates on the spot market again saw strong gains in April, according to monthly rates data from Truckstop.com. All three major truckload segments — dry van, reefer and flatbed — surged in the month, and all three flirted with all-time highs since Truckstop.com began reporting monthly rate averages.

Spring has sprung on the spot market
So much for March going out like a lamb. Nationally, the final week of the month featured a 3.5 percent increase in available freight, a 3.1 percent decrease in capacity, and another record high load-to-truck ratio for flatbed freight, and rates continued to rise in the early week.

The number of loads on DAT load boards was up 5 percent and truck posts were up 3 percent last week, an indication that the economy continues to hum along. Unless you’re a flatbed hauler, in which case there’s a little more going on than just humming.

Spring freight season signs: Where’s it getting hot and where it’s not
DAT analyst Mark Montague notes that “we see flatbed accelerating ahead of schedule. Generally, we have had a La Nina winter that has resulted in more precipitation in the northern tier of states and allowed states in the Southeast region to get a jump on spring.”

With the rise in fuel over the last half-year, have rates really risen by much?
Separating out fuel surcharges from average rates over the July 2017 (when fuel prices hit a 2017 trough) to January 2018 period, spot market dry van and reefer rates are still up well more than 10 percent each, flatbed less so.
