Currently, drivers hauling ag commodities operate under certain HOS exemptions, such as the 150-air-mile radius exemption that allows drivers carrying ag commodities to skip recording duty status if they stay within a 150-air-mile radius of the source of the commodity, among others.

FMCSA grants waiver to fleet allowing 150 air-mile radius for short-haul exemption
RJR Transportation requested the exemption last October. In its request, the company told the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration most of its trucks operate within 100 air-miles of its headquarters, but approximately 5% of its drivers exceed 100 air miles but not 150 air miles.

Trash, recycling pickup company requests reprieve from certain short-haul exemption provisions
Kimble Recycling & Disposal says its short-haul trash and recycling pickup drivers cannot complete their work day within the 12 hours required by the short-haul exemption and requests to allow its drivers to operate up to 14 hours in a day.

DOT funding bill would force 30-minute break to remain in hours regs
In what could become a clash between lawmakers in the U.S. House and a Department of Transportation aiming to propose an overhaul to driversâ hours of service regulations, a working version of the annual Transportation Department funding bill released by the Houseâs Appropriations Committee last week would bar the DOT from eliminating the 30-minute break requirement of current hours regs.

FMCSA has filed a âpre-rule,â also known as an advanced notice of proposed rulemaking, with the White Houseâs Office of Management and Budget that will seek industry input for defining who is allowed to run under exemptions granted to truckers hauling agriculture commodities.

Fireworks haulers seek hours relief during Independence Day holiday period
The American Pyrotechnics Association has submitted a petition to add four new members to its existing hours exemption during the Independence Day holiday period. A separate fireworks hauler, Extreme Logistics, has also requested an HOS exemption for its 12 drivers during the same holiday period.
