423,430-lb. move on modular open deck

Dynamic Specialized of New Kent, Va., hauls heavy with a fleet of European trailer manufacturer Faymonville’s ModulMAX G-SL models. On a recent run of a massive transformer for a local substation in Newport News, the specialists assembled the trailer in a 4-by-6 combination with a flat deck:

The move was permitted at a gross weight of 423,430 lbs. and “rough outline dimensions,” says operations manager Josh Sohler, of 130 feet in length, 11’4” wide and 15’3” high. The move was permitted at a gross weight of 423,430 lbs. and “rough outline dimensions,” says operations manager Josh Sohler, of 130 feet in length, 11’4” wide and 15’3” high.

Originally, “this unit came into another terminal,” Sohler adds, but the overall height necessitated “alternate arrangements with the local floating crane to have this unit discharged at the Newport News Marine Terminal.”

From there, Dynamic Specialized moved the transformer overland about 10 miles, with the various restrictions. The cross-jurisdictional move required utilizing city streets, getting onto state-maintained roads and entering an interstate highway before re-entering city streets for the final delivery.

Trailer features such as “rolled platform deck edges,” Sohler says, “more robust steering arms or easily accessible knee pin locations, have helped keep us on the road longer with significantly reduced support requirements.” The unit’s modularity, overall capacity and ease of use have allowed the company to handle more size and more weight, effectively, with less equipment. “That has [been] and continues to be a major key to success.”
